The John F. Kennedy Memorial Medical Center was opened with the support of the United States of America in 1971. However, it was formally established by the Liberian Legislature as an autonomous agency of the Government of Liberia in 1972. Liberia assumed full operation rights from the Americans in 1978.

The JFKMC is the largest Referral Hospital in the Republic of Liberia and is located in the capital city of Monrovia. Although severely damaged during the Liberia Civil War, it has been largely rehabilitated and continues to improve its capabilities and growth capacity. The JFKMC was named in memory of John Fitzgerald Kennedy, the 35th President of the United of America.
The Medical Center is composed of four institutions: The John F. Kennedy Memorial Hospital, Maternity Hospital, Tubman National Institute of Medical Arts (A Nursing and Paramedical School), Catherine Mills Rehabilitation Hospital (A Psychiatric Care Facility).
